A heartbreaking scene unfolded in a remote area of Thailand as a group of elephants mourned the loss of a young elephant. The incident was captured on video by a passing motorist, who was moved to tears by the display of emotion from the elephants.
In the video, a large elephant can be seen carrying the body of a young elephant across a road. The elephant then sets the body down on the opposite edge of the road, and several other elephants approach. The group includes both adult and young elephants, and they pause around the young, deceased elephant.
According to Kawan, the individual who captured the video, the elephants were in mourning and appeared to be in a “funeral procession.” He explained, “The family just don’t want to leave the baby.”
The elephants stayed with the young elephant for some time before eventually continuing on their journey. However, they did not leave the body behind. One of the larger elephants picked it up with its trunk and carried it away.
The emotional scene has touched many who have watched the video, with some commenting on the incredible capacity for empathy and mourning shown by these intelligent animals.
