Bernie and Diane were thrilled to have a large family of five boys, but when their children were all adults, they decided to have a daughter – this time through adoption. So the two attended an adoption event where Diane saw a black and white photo on a billboard. Diane was attracted to the little girl in the photo and thought it meant adopting her.
But when Bernie and Diane came under more pressure to find out more about the mysterious girl in the photo, social workers tried to persuade them to look for another child, with one even telling them: “Something is wrong with her. Despite all the warnings, the two were determined to find out more about the girl, but nothing could prepare them for the truth.
The two eventually discovered an investigation in 2007 that pointed to a horrific history of horrific abuse of a child. The girl in the photo was Danielle, who was found at age seven in a Florida home and believed to be a feral child. Up to this age she had never been outside and was unable to speak, answer or communicate in any way. She couldn’t eat solid food. She was locked in a room with only a dirty mattress. Detective Mark Holst said of the case he was involved in: “I have been doing this job for 27 years, but so far this is the worst case of negligence I have encountered.”

Daniel’s biological mother lost her parental rights and was subsequently transferred to a sanitarium. That’s how the photo got on the adoption event board. Despite having all sorts of behavioral and developmental issues with Danielle, Bernie and Diane quickly embraced her!
What happened is absolutely amazing – proof that evil doesn’t always triumph: Danielle has found a real home and parents who will now give her all the support she needs to develop normally.
