Isabel Jennings, a young nurse at the Life Care Center in Kansas City, bonded specifically with a patient through music and hymns.
Isabel routinely helped her patient, Mary Helen Schmels, and every Friday she went to Mary’s room and sang a song to her.
A few months after they met, Marie experienced some difficulties. She had heart failure and was about to die
Isabelle came to the care center on her day off after the news and sang another song for Mary. Marie’s daughter Julie took up the nurse’s assistant beautifully for her friend. Isabelle sang “In The Garden” brilliantly.
“I loved Helen and made her a friend and I knew this would be the last time I would see her,” Isabelle told Today. When her family and Mary’s granddaughter learned of her condition, she comforted them.
Mary asked Isabelle to sing to her every time she saw her. Isabelle also said that she really cares about everyone and is always ready to help.
Mary Helen died days after the video was shot. Her daughter Julie posted the video to YouTube and hopes it will encourage other caregivers.
Julie stated, “The nicest gift you can offer someone is your time, just your compassion.”
