A kayaker found a 6-year-old boy swimming alone in the Saint-Louis River and helped him to safety after being separated from his parents’ sailboat.
The rescue was captured on the canoe’s hull camera.
Here is what DJ Jones wrote on his Instagram account:
“Yesterday, I had the impression of wanting to fish the Saint-Louis River from the landing stage of a scout. When I got to the ramp another couple was fishing. A father is in his sailboat while his son is swimming right next to him. arrived at the water, all seemed well at least at the moment. The wind picked up and the waves also at a rapid pace. I watched the father pull his anchor. Meanwhile, his son kept swimming like the next time I watched his dad was gone. While I was addicted to what I thought at the time was a sturgeon. I heard That cry that no parent would ever want to hear. The sound was that of a child crying for his life as he was carried away by the current. . I then rowed my fishing line as fast as I could to the 6 year old. Apart from his father, he sailed the boat Hundreds of meters later, I was the only craft in sight. I quickly calmed the child down and left for the beach. I was worried about how cold the weather told me he was feeling, so EMS called him. I stayed long enough to watch law enforcement and her father find his daughter.”
Officers questioned the boy’s father and learned they were boating on a river when the boy wanted to swim alongside the boat, holding a rope attached. The boy lost his grip on the rope and the wind blew the schooner away from the boy.
