The former president first discovered Rosalyn in their hometown of Plains, Georgia. He told The Washington Post he asked her out, and after their first date, Jamie told his mother he was going to marry Rosalynn. The couple married for the first time on July 7, 1946, Jamie was 21 years old while Rosalynn was only 18 years old.
Jimmy quickly immersed his time in politics and winning elections, Rosalynn was his steadfast support system and partner, and one of their greatest accomplishments together was when Jimmy became the 39th President of the United States.
After leaving office, the couple dedicated their time to defending human rights and founding The Carter Center, an organization that “seeks to prevent and resolve conflict, advance freedom and democracy, and to improve health” in accordance with its mission.
Now older, the couple leads a simple life in the small town where they were both born. The couple told People that their long marriage was due to their shared passion for serving others. They built homes in Nepal and fought river blindness with The Carter Center.
