Over the decades, Nelson has performed at charity concerts, raised funds for victims of terrorism and supported political candidates. Animal charities were the people closest and dearest to his heart.
The singer has even provided sanctuary for dozens of horses at Luck Ranch, his 700-acre paradise outside Austin, Texas. Luck Ranch currently has over 70 horses, many of which were rescued from slaughterhouses by Nelson.
Nelson jokes that he came up with the idea of naming the farm “Lucky Farm” because when you’re there, you’re lucky and when you’re not, your luck is far away.
“My horses are probably the luckiest horses in the world,” Nelson told ABC News. “They are hand-fed twice a day.”
Where they were near death, they now wander happily through the Texas countryside. Each year Nelson hosts Luck Reunion, a music festival allowing people to see the farm and even feed some of Nelson’s horses.
Additionally, Nelson wrote about his love for horses in his latest song, “Ride Me Back Home.”
For his horse activism, Nelson received the 2015 People’s Tellly Award. Habitat for Horses to persuade lawmakers. enact a law to end the slaughter of horses.
