On the March 7, 2023, episode of “The Voice,” the coaches were in for the ultimate surprise during auditions when late-night talk show host Jimmy Fallon took the stage to perform Michael McDonald’s “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near).”
In the customary blind auditions, the coaches remained oblivious to the performer’s identity until the first coach, Clarkson, hit her buzzer and turned around. Laughter erupted as Fallon was revealed, with coaches Niall Horan and Chance the Rapper following suit, captivated by Fallon’s passionate rendition.
Despite the comedic revelation, coach Shelton stayed put, facing away from the stage. Undeterred, Fallon marched over to Shelton and pressed the coach’s buzzer himself, prompting a playful protest from Shelton about breaking the rules.
Following the performance, Fallon disclosed the purpose behind the surprise. He was there to congratulate Shelton, who would be departing “The Voice” after an impressive 23 seasons.
“I texted Carson (Daly) and said, I gotta come over and say, ‘Hey Buddy, 23 seasons. Congratulations — you’re a legend,'” Fallon shared before embracing Shelton.
Shelton, realizing Fallon’s true identity, humorously remarked, “It didn’t take me long to figure out that it was Jimmy Fallon. And there was no way I was gonna hit my button; he does not deserve the chair turn on this show. Jimmy’s impersonation is the equivalent of walking up to Michael McDonald and slapping him in the face as hard as you can,” concluding the entertaining episode
