Gymnastics can be a serious and intense sport, but Paul Hunt decided to add some humor to the routines. Hunt was a National Champion in the United States in 1972 and went on to become a coach, where he came up with the idea to incorporate comedy into gymnastic routines.
He created alter egos such as “Paulette Huntsinova” and “Paulina Huntesque,” who began performing in a variety of gymnastic disciplines. One of their most popular routines was performed on the uneven bars at the 1981 Nadia Tour, where the audience was in for a treat.
Hunt’s comedic routine had the audience laughing out loud. Even judges found the routine enjoyable and humorous, with one jokingly commenting during a move, “I guess you would call that a back circle.” Despite the humor, Hunt’s moves still required tremendous skill.
The addition of humor to gymnastics routines was a refreshing change and became a hit with audiences. Hunt’s performances were a reminder that even in competitive sports, there’s always room for some lighthearted fun.
