George was walking to a Westland Federal Credit Union ATM when he spotted a plastic container in the middle of the aisle. Speaking to WDIV reporters, George said he stopped his car and took the container, which he thought was just a residual refusal from another motorist.
George felt he would be a good Samaritan and took the container so other drivers wouldn’t have to swerve to avoid it when going to the ATM.
Upon receiving the container, George was surprised to see a sign stating that it contained $40,000.
George parked his car, went to the bank to return the money. Putting the money on the bank table, George asked, “Is there a $40,000 reward?” As the staff seemed stunned, WDIV continued. The staff thanked George for his kindness and quickly put the container back behind the counter.
The bank later determined that despite the $40,000 mark, the container contained only $27,000. Security footage also showed that around 20 minutes before George went to an ATM, an armored car company employee mistakenly left the container in the aisle as he emptied the ATM , reports CNN.
George has since been hailed as a good Samaritan for his money. Alicia Stewart, who runs Westland Federal Credit Union, said $27,000 would have been a huge loss for the bank.
To show their appreciation, Alicia awarded George an undisclosed sum of money.
For his part, George believes that anyone would have done what he did if he had been in the same situation. When George was asked if he had ever considered keeping the money, he replied that it was not his and he had never thought of taking it, WDIV concluded.
