In February 2019, a former neighbor contacted Wendi Bear, who lives in Irvine, California. This neighbour, Anne-Marie, asked Wendy if she would agree to be with her for a few weeks. She was returning from Florida to California and needed temporary housing.
Anne-Marie said she had few options and was desperate. Wendy said she could stay a month until she was up again. They agreed that Anne-Marie would not have to pay rent while she looked for work.
After a month. Anne-Marie was still living in the apartment, sleeping on the sofa, showing no sign of going anywhere soon.
It got to the point where Wendy and her daughter started to feel like prisoners. This went on for several months, until Wendy met Anne Marie. Anne told Marie to get out.
This is where Wendi got her lesson in how renting works. You would think that Wendi could kick the guest out of the house at any time. Anne Marie is not on the lease, and she is not paying the rent.
Unfortunately, this type of unwanted guest is protected by law. What happens next is unexpected.
