The hotel where she worked tried to make her work on Sundays, but she refused to come to work. Pierre, now 60, has worked at the hotel for more than 10 years and her personal records clearly indicate that she has the right to take Sundays off to honor her religious beliefs.
Not only did she go to church that day, but she was also a vital member of the Catholic missionary group called Soldiers of Christ Church.
So when the kitchen manager gave her multiple Sunday shifts starting in 2015, she refused to take it. After she missed six scheduled shifts, the hotel kicked her out.
However, I made the decision to fight back and ended up suing the parent company of the hotel. Her trial was successful, and the jury ordered Conrad Miami to pay Marie-Jean-Pierre $36,000 in damages, $500,000 in emotional suffering, and $21 million in punitive damages.
Pierre’s religious beliefs were protected by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 according to his attorney, and therefore the hotel was required to provide reasonable accommodations to respect them. They celebrate Peter’s cause as a victory not only for her but for workers across the country.
