No one – or at least no member of the royal family – wore a better jacket than Princess Diana. They have been her preferred choice for all of her mother’s times with her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.
She’s been seen in the sweaters when she’s running to school, playing outside with the boys, and even when the family is on a plane. One of the moments can be seen here as she solves a puzzle with three-year-old William in the playroom of their home at Kensington Palace in October 1985.
She wasn’t afraid to wear red clothes from head to toe
Here she is with her then-husband Prince Charles during a visit to Florence, Italy in April 1985. The most interesting thing here is not even her monochromatic dress, but her choice of color for her stockings. While tights may not be fashionable for the younger generation, Princess Diana is showing that they shouldn’t be associated with outdated notions of stuffy old ladies.
Part of the key to Diana’s success in making colorful stockings always chic is that the princess often wears colorful stockings to match her dresses. I made sure that the red color of her stockings here didn’t clash with her jacket, skirt, and shoes, which were all the exact same color.
You can’t miss it
How to stand out in front of a thick layer of white snow? That’s right – a dress in red. There’s a reason fire trucks and stop signs are usually red. Red is a highly visible color that attracts attention. Here is Princess Diana on a skiing holiday in Malbun, Liechtenstein in January 1985. Did you notice the person next to her dressed in yellow? Yes, and neither do we.
The red dress she wore when she attended the show is now visible on the screens
A month before marrying Prince Charles, she attended the Bond premiere of ‘For Your Eyes Only’ at the Odeon Cinemas in Leicester Square in June 1981, wearing a bright red Belleville Sassoon chiffon dress. She completed the look with matching sapphire earrings, necklace and bracelet. Actress Emma Corinne, who plays Princess Diana in The Crown, is seen during the show’s fourth season wearing a red and gold version of the number.
