Once Cecil passed all his tests, hormone treatments began and Elliot’s sister’s eggs were fertilized with Matthew’s sperm. Despite the challenges she seemed to be facing, Cecil got pregnant on her first attempt with the implant. Although the pregnancy was not easy due to her age, she handled it with grace.
She suffered from morning sickness and high blood pressure, but against all odds the baby girl was finally born and her name was Uma Louise Dougherty. Uma was born without needing a caesarean section! Naturally, the baby’s parents overcame their emotions during the birth process, unabashedly letting their tears flow.
Matthew told the Daily Mail: “I don’t know how to describe her; she’s wonderful. I have deep respect for her and am so generous that even when I come of age she still goes to the beyond for me.”
He can’t believe how far his mother would go to make him happy and help him start a family. She is also credited with shaping him into the person he is today, to him she is an incredible, strong and feminine fighter.
When Cécile was asked about the birth process, she told the Daily Mail that it was not difficult for her to give the baby to her son. She felt the baby was her grandson the whole time, and the pregnancy had exhausted her so much that she was happy to hand the baby over to her loving parents!
Two years later, Matthew and Elliot moved their parents to Uma. Although it’s usually private, the couple decided to share their journey of parenthood with the world in a bid to counter the hate they received when their story was first made public.
Although most comments on social media were positive, there were angry and negative comments, they told the Guardian. But luckily, many of the people they contacted had positive things to say. They told the newspaper:
“People have reached out from all over the world. They want to help in any way they can.”
The family now documents their life on Instagram as The Dürt Family, where they have over 21,000 followers. On their website, they describe themselves as a “simple, full-time travel family” who camp across the United States before they want to go overseas. Their website also said:
“We hope to connect with communities and explore new (and old) ways of living on this planet by cultivating and managing a reciprocal relationship with this sacred land. All while deliberately raising our daughter and deseducating her.”
Finally, he said, their “message” is “to become storytellers, seekers of spirituality and students of the world.” Meanwhile, Uma, who is now 2 years old, is pretty cool these days. There are plenty of photos of her with Matthew and Elliot on Instagram and the trio looked incredibly happy to be exploring nature together.
Last year, a friend of the couple started a GoFundMe page to raise money for Elliot to adopt Uma. More than $5,000 was raised and in an update organizers said the couple had been in contact with a local attorney and started the formal process for Elliott to legally adopt their daughter.
Last month, the family revealed they had bought a van so they could live their ‘truck life’ together and continue exploring the outdoors. We wish them the best in their travels
