The Robinson family bought a house in a remote area where they wanted to build a farm.
Mrs. Robinson was pregnant and had to give birth to her second child, a boy, within 4 months. Once they moved into the new home, they began preparing the baby’s room for the birth of a new family member.
Because they lived in an apartment where the owner wouldn’t let them have a dog, the Robinsons now wanted at least one puppy, animal lovers.
The couple visited an animal shelter with their 6-year-old son Matthias to choose a dog. They wanted a puppy that would not be aggressive and would grow up with the kids on the farm.
After visiting pastures and hearing the sad stories of many dogs, they hadn’t decided which dog to choose.
At the end of the visit they passed a 4 year old bull named Benson. He stood back, tail tucked, head bowed, and seemed to have completely lost faith in humans.
The Robinsons wanted to know Benson’s story and volunteers at the shelter told them that Benson led a very sad life. It was used in dog fights and then left on the street where volunteers found it.
After a stint at the shelter, Benson was adopted by a couple, but just two weeks later he was brought back to the shelter on the grounds that Benson was aggressive towards his owners and had behavioral problems.
Although the volunteers did not recommend adopting Benson by a family with children, Mr. Robinson insisted on giving Benson a chance to be adopted. Even getting to the car was difficult because Benson wasn’t used to walking with a chain, but they got home in the end.
In the early days, Benson was very withdrawn, shy, and suspicious. But over time, Benson began to adjust and bond with the whole family, especially Mathias.
After Mrs. Robinson gave birth, they brought the baby home and introduced him to Benson. Smell the baby’s odor and gently lick his face. From that moment on, the owners knew that Benson was a great dog and that the two would get along very well.
One night when the baby was only two months old, the Robinsons were awakened in the middle of the night by Benson’s loud barking. He kept barking and tried to reach the crib, but he couldn’t get past the bars of the crib and started biting the crib to get at the baby. At first, the Robinsons were scared and thought Benson was trying to harm the baby, but as they held the baby in their arms, they noticed that the baby was not breathing.
They took him to a nearby hospital where doctors were able to save him. The doctor told the parents that if the child had been in cardiac arrest for more than 30 minutes, he would have died.
Benson became a hero and proved that nothing is random. Robinson’s family rescued Benson, a dog no one gave a chance, and Benson saved her child’s life.
