The videos show that during the traffic stop, Nichols was punched and kicked while being restrained by police officers. He pleads to go home and calls out for his mother, but even after the beating, while he lay motionless against a car, the officers ignored him. Nichols was hospitalized after the encounter and die d on January 10th.
The reason for the traffic stop is still unclear, with Memphis police initially stating it was for suspected reckless driving, but police chief Cerelyn “CJ” Davis later said that claim could not be substantiated. The use of force by authorities is also called into question, as Nichols did not appear to fight back. The videos do not answer why the officers felt compelled to confront him twice.
