Imagine LeClerc’s shock when he realizes he made a profit of $126,940 on a desk he bought earlier today. He said he was originally looking for handles that might have fallen off and had been tucked away in one of the many drawers over the years.

“I pushed the desk forward and when the handle came out the envelope fell off,” LeClerc told Wicked Local. “The first thing I saw was a $500 bond.”

Faced with the decision of what to do with the bonds, LeClerc didn’t hesitate. Contact the auction house and try to contact the original family.

Turns out the family has been looking for savings bonds for a while

LeClerc called the son of the man who was the original owner of the office. It turns out the desk, along with a number of other items, was auctioned off to help cover medical bills and accommodation for her 94-year-old father.

“The family had been looking for them for years,” said Marge E. Kelly, manager of the auction house where the desk was sold. He was very happy. It can’t happen to a nice boy.”

LeClerc returned the savings bonds to their rightful owner and said he didn’t regret it for a minute

The family requested anonymity but told reporters the money could not have come at a better time.

“We love stories like this. That’s why we do what we do,” Kelly said. “It’s going to change their lives, you know? They completely changed their lives.”

“It was a great find,” LeClerc said. “It was even better after hearing the family story.”
