Speaking to Yahoo Lifestyle, Melissa said the letter had eight items and was written by a 9-year-old boy. While most kids his age ask for the latest electronics, Melissa was heartbroken to see that the boy’s Christmas list included essentials like food and clothes. In a note attached to the list, the boy begged Santa for help, reminding Santa that he hadn’t visited his family’s house last year.
“Dear Santa, last year you didn’t notice me,” the boy wrote according to Yahoo, “so I hope this year you notice me, and this year I’ll be good. I promise little finger…”
After reading the letter, Melissa knew she had to help the boy and his family. Although the child included his full name, he did not include his address. By querying the Bloomsburg Post Office, Melissa was able to track down the family with the help of her co-workers.
When Melissa knocked on the family’s door, she was greeted by the boy’s mother. Explaining to him that she had read her son’s letter, Melissa told him that she would like to help his family this Christmas. Speaking to reporters from local station WNEP, Melissa said the boy’s mother was happy to accept his help as they shared a tearful embrace in the rain.
Melissa then went around the community asking for donations on behalf of the family. In the end, Melissa raised over $500. The postman was also able to collect other items, such as food, clothing, and toys. Melissa gave the family several gift cards to the local grocery store so they could cook a great Christmas dinner. The rest of the items she plans to deliver on Christmas Eve.
Melissa hopes the kids won’t see her when she arrives so they can credit the donated items to Santa’s job. Although hailed as a hero for all she has done, Melissa says she was thrilled to have helped the family make their Christmas special.
